Take 10 With COUPAR’S Roshie Larijani
Design Director Roshie Larijani has been with COUPAR for nearly nine years. She has managed projects from concept to installation and is instrumental in the training and ongoing education of the studio team members. Born and raised in San Jose, Roshie comes to COUPAR with a BA in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Arts University. Her cultural background influenced her aesthetics, exposing her to the vibrancy of Iranian textiles and exquisitely crafted Persian rugs. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, including her two young daughters and extended Persian relatives.
CC: What first drew you to interior design?
RL: From a very young age, I was drawn to the arts. My parents enrolled me in a local art studio, where I learned color theory and sketching, which progressed to oil painting. My passion for art led me to study further in Art School, where I became interested in the Interior Design curriculum. Later in college, I realized that I’ve always analyzed a space without even really thinking about it. I loved the relationships between scale, circulation, and how people move in their space.
CC: What is your favorite part of the design process?
RL: My favorite part of the design process is getting to know our clients and understanding how they use their space and their needs. I approach it like solving a puzzle. Each project presents a unique challenge, where we balance the client's needs with the constraints we face, whether it's the space itself or budget.
CC: Minimalism vs Maximalism?
RL: I'm probably somewhere in between, but I think every item placed should serve a function and be intentional. A sparse space sometimes feels cold, so I love layering in different fabrics and textures to add warmth without overdoing it.
CC: What would be your dream design project to take on?
RL: My dream design project would be building my own home from the ground up with the support of my husband, who is a builder.
CC: How does your Persian background influence your aesthetics?
RL: One thing that will always feel essential is a beautiful rug, whether it's saturated or muted, a hand-woven quality rug. It's an element that adds warmth and depth to any space. It's an investment that is absolutely worth it. I'm also definitely drawn to a warmer color palette. I know this is a direct reflection of the vibrant colors and patterns I grew up with in my Persian household.
CC: The most adventurous thing you've done in your life?
RL: Studying abroad for a semester in Italy was the most adventurous thing. I boarded the plane without knowing anyone who enrolled in the program. It turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, allowing me to make lifelong friends and deepen my understanding of art and architecture. Not to mention a semester of delicious Italian food :)
CC: What is your ideal way to spend a weekend day?
RL: An ideal weekend for me is all about slowing things down. I love getting outside to hike or play tennis. After that, it's all about good food and quality family time.
CC: Your idea of a perfect meal?
RL: I love food and am always open to trying new things; this is tough, but I will almost always be open to eating a good cheeseburger with French fries.
CC: What is your current TV Obsession?
RL: Emily in Paris
CC: Favorite vacation spot?
RL: Mallorca, Spain
