Anatomy of a Room: Martin Young’s First Showcase

Martin Young, founder, and principal designer, of Martin Young Design, is honored to participate in the 2020 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. This year has had its constant curveballs, but the Showcase and its designers seamlessly adapted to ensure the show continued even during the pandemic. Martin's inaugural showcase room, Silhouettes, a sitting room, nods to the current times.

It's been no small feat designing a room while on lockdown. With the ambiguous mandates that change at the drop of a pin, it's challenging for a lot of designers to maintain momentum on their projects, especially Showcase. However, once construction was approved to continue in the city Martin and the other showcase designers eagerly resumed while respecting proper safety precautions of mandatory masks and maintaining 6 feet from one another.

This year's Showcase will be almost entirely virtual. The showhouse looks different than past years, but will still be an incredible experience. The SF Decorator Showcase team utilizes social media and other online tools to promote to their captive audience. When they picked back up with construction, they created and shared a video emulating the lockdown celebrity video, "Fight Challenge," that went viral on Instagram.

Martin's sitting room gleans inspiration from the new WFH way of life with an added sense of retreat and serenity. We have now begun to reimagine select spaces in our abodes. Should a sitting room be limited to a single function? The offices we once knew were rigid and uniform, but now they vastly vary and are unique to the individual. Martin wanted to cultivate a versatile area, whether it be a place to lounge or to work. The room's design is timeless, with each detail inviting the viewer to imagine the expansive nature of the space.

As the showhouse's grand opening on August 29th nears, we can hardly wait to see the finished product. The Decorator Showcase and it's designers choosing to persevere during these turbulent times highlights the skill and talent found here in the San Francisco Bay Area design industry.
