Classic Blue: A Timeless Hue Heralds The New Year
What color will shape the design world in 2020? Pantone announces their Color of the Year Classic Blue. The decorative arts have favored this celestial and spiritual shade throughout the centuries. Portuguese azulejos, blue and white tiles inspired by Ming Dynasty porcelains brought back by explorers during the sixteenth century, merged Eastern and Western iconography. Lisbon native Antonio Martins embellished his Master Bedroom in the 2014 San Francisco Decorator Showcase with copies of antique azulejos rendered in oversized squares by master decorative painters Linda Horning and Katherine Jacobus. Martins installed them randomly for a contemporary twist.
Ann Lowengart often selects classic blues for her interiors. In this family's Peninsula colonial style home, she saturated the walls of the central library with twenty coats of lapis blue lacquer. For the drapes, she used linen ombre panels that transition from pale to midnight blue. She lined the curtains with a subtle blue and white lattice cotton print. During the holidays, the couple will relax on their indigo upholstered tête-à-tête while their children play board games on a Baroque card table.
Classic blue takes on a modern interpretation in the Silicon Valley Pied-à-Terre Martin Young designed for his clients. In the open-concept living room, dining room, and kitchen, Young painted one closet door the deep shade, pairing it with a lighter vibrant tone. Young etched the color throughout the monochromatic project. On a Cees Braakman cabinet bridging the living and dining areas, he displayed a trio of cobalt mid-century volcanic lava glaze vessels. In the bedroom, a Japanese indigo patchwork textile dresses the bed.
Classic Blue, how will you use this timeless hue in the New Year and beyond?
