Pantone Color of the Year: Very Peri
Pantone has announced its color of the year for 2022: Very Peri. This bold, whimsical hue represents the hopefulness we're all beginning to embrace. As we slowly emerge from extended periods of lockdowns, we lean on colors that add a playful, lightheartedness to our days. The color periwinkle named for the blooming ground cover juxtaposes the serenity of blue with the energy of its red undertone. Martin Young Design used the shade to upholster contemporary high-back slipper chairs in a San Francisco Spanish Revival home's dining room. A vintage blue and rust Kerman rug anchors the space while the client's heirloom 'Flow Blue" china collection is displayed prominently.
While this striking color isn’t typically top of mind for interiors, periwinkle can be a delightful addition to any space. Iconic designer, John Saladino, has an unwavering affinity for the hue. Saladino introduced periwinkle to his Savel textile collection. “I like color that feels elusive and changes with the light. I often use a grey with a little red, so it appears mauve in the evening hours. I’m known for shades like periwinkle, blue-gray, and a bluish-white.” Periwinkle is versatile. Saladino utilizes it in various spaces ranging from living rooms to garden terraces. It evokes quiet confidence that immediately sets the tone when you enter, especially when used on a large scale.
On why the hue is perfect for 2022, Pantone says, "Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light." Alongside the year's color, Pantone released a selection of suggested palettes that melds with Very Peri. The four schemes consist of "A Balancing Act," "Wellspring," "Star of the Show," and "Amusements," offering ample color inspiration as we begin 2022.
