The Curated House: Michael S. Smith in Conversation with Suzanne Tucker
Design San Francisco is just around the corner (Feb 5-6, 2020), and this year's keynote speaker will be Santa Monica based interior designer Michael S. Smith. Held in the Galleria Atrium of the San Francisco Design Center, Smith will be sharing his thoughts about the curated house with San Francisco interior design icon Suzanne Tucker, of Tucker & Marks Design. Both Smith and Tucker share California roots informed by international travel and studies.
Smith began his career with the late San Juan Capistrano antiquarian Gep Durenberger and went on to work in association with New York designer John Saladino. Launching his own company Michael S. Smith, in 1990, his curator's eye distills the best of European tradition with modernist America. When the Obamas sought a designer for their private White House quarters, Smith was the natural choice to create a restrained elegance.
Tucker, the protegee of design legend Michael Taylor, opened Tucker & Marks in 1986 with Timothy Marks, her business partner, and future husband. She and Smith will have much to converse about, in addition to their impressive profiles of projects, they also ventured into other areas; both Tucker and Smith design textile and furniture lines, author books and are active on the speaking circuit. Their tastes also overlap searching for exquisite art and antiques for their clients.
