How to Stay Ahead of Instagram's Changes

Instagram has become a significant component of our personal and professional lives. When Instagram, announced that they are testing out a new feature that would hide likes from users, people instantly questioned what this meant for the future of the platform, especially from a business perspective. The test consists of removing the total number of likes from photos and videos that show up on the main feed, profiles, and permalink pages. Only the user will be able to see the number of likes on their post.

What is the motivation behind this update test? Instagram wants to shift users away from an unhealthy focus on how many likes they receive on their posts. Several studies reveal the negative toll social media has on mental health due to the constant comparison to others, especially among younger demographics. While getting rid of likes could potentially improve the negative impacts on mental health and could be beneficial for personal accounts, what does this mean for the businesses accounts?

The visual based platform is undeniably a vital marketing tool for designers, architects, builders, and artistans. It’s essential to understand how to stay ahead of the tide on the everchanging platform. With likes disappearing, follower counts and number of comments will still show which will still indicate the level of engagement on a profile. There is hope that this will then demand higher quality and more authentic content due to users not gauging the quality of a post off of a number. Below are a few tips and tricks for how to stay relevant and keep followers engaged.

  1. Incorporate more call and response into your captions: Asking followers for their participation will encourage comments and makes users feel appreciated and considered.

  2. Create and share more video content: Attention spans are decreasing, and video content often performs better than static images. Also, videos currently showcase the number of views first rather than likes.

  3. Post stories regularly: Posting Instagram stories ensures people see your name often and stories are served to people more directly than on the feed.

There is no guarantee that Instagram will get rid of likes, although it could end up having a positive effect on both personal and business accounts. Sharing high-quality content and feeling less pressured to compare will hopefully result in making Instagram a more enjoyable, healthier online environment.
